Home' Nonahood News : NONA 050116 Contents Wow! Two super im-
portant days fall in the
month of May. One is
a national holiday ob-
served for good reason.
The other was established
to appreciate a person to
whom everyone owes
their life. It seems many
times, though, we misun-
derstand why these days
even exist. With lack of
understanding often comes complacency or a “busi-
ness-as -usual” mentality where we may just think of
these days as an opportunity to have a barbeque or an
outing to a restaurant. I can honestly admit I’m very
guilty of this casual attitude. That’s not to say everyone
should take these days as super serious for the whole
day, but maybe just pause to think a little more deeply
about their significance.
Memorial Day for me, growing up and as a young
adult, meant a day off from school and/or work. Later,
as I became an older adult, it meant outdoor eating,
and drinking – a mini-July 4th of sorts. One thing I
understood was that we most certainly needed to sa-
lute the troops. It wasn’t until recently that I looked up
what Memorial Day signifies and how it is different
from Veteran’s Day.
Memorial Day is set aside to commemorate individu-
als who lost their lives in service to the United States of
America. That’s not to say this day isn’t for veterans. Im-
agine how difficult this day must be for living veterans
who lost a fellow friend in service and/or witnessed other
soldiers lose their lives during battle. With these thoughts
in mind, I have learned to appreciate Memorial Day and
the people Memorial Day honors and impacts as more
than just an opportunity to go to the beach.
For Mother’s Day, it’s of course a day where we take
Mom out for dinner. Maybe Dad does the cooking or
laundry this one day (in my house, it’s both). We most
certainly need to stare lifelessly at the grocery store
greeting card aisle that has already been picked over,
appearing like the aftermath of a Black Friday sale.
But why? To make Mom feel special? I’m not going
to be “that guy” who says we need to make Mom feel
special every day, which we all know we should. And
our American Mother’s Day rituals will not allow us to
skip the card and dinner this year. Maybe, just think
about a time where Mom did something super cool for
you growing up. For me, one memory leads to another.
Moms can be so altruistic; you probably don’t even
need to mention your own personal memory to them,
but I bet they would really appreciate it if you did.
Along with the pastel colored, bi-folded cardboard
with someone else’s thoughtful message on it, and the
outdoor shindig with copious amounts of patio food
and beer, I’m going to set aside a small amount of time
time to reflect and understand why both Memorial
Day and Mother’s Day are special days on the calendar.
