Watercrest Seniors Helping Students
Remember when you were a teenager and spring
break came along? We had time off from school to go
to the beach, hang out with friends and do our best to
not get in trouble. If we were really lucky, our parents
may have a trip planned for us. Something we could
bring a friend on and come back to school with some
Over the last 10 years, my buddy and I have used
these breaks from school to chaperone trips for stu-
dents, their friends and even some of their families,
trips that would provide some amazing experiences
while also learning something along the way. Our
trips aren’t the usual trips to a beach or to the moun-
tains but instead trips abroad. Over this last decade,
we have taken trips to London, Madrid, Munich,
Rome, Barcelona, Venice, Paris and more. We have
used these experiences to break through the four
walls of the classroom and teach these young adults
about the world outside of central Florida.
In the spring of 2017, we are at it again, taking a
group of young adults to London, Paris, Rome and
Florence over a 10-day trip with the goal of having
one heck of a fun Spring Break but also learning a
thing or two along the way.
If your student or your entire family is inter-
ested in joining us, you can visit our tour site at
We also have a Facebook page at
where you can see pictures and stories from our past
trips, as well as information for this spring. Just think,
you, too, could live like the Romans (for 10 days, any-
Our very own Watercrest of Lake Nona has part-
nered with Scott Evans, Senior Administrator of
Orange County Public Schools (OCPS) Visual and
Performing Arts, in creating a cooperative medium
between senior residents and OCPS students.
Beginning this school year, Watercrest of Lake
Nona plans to begin fundraisers for students, from
Kindergarten to high school seniors, to participate
in county, district and state ensembles. According to
Chris Shepherd, Watercrest VP of Creative Program
Development, “Watercrest will support OCPS Visual
and Performing Arts through fundraisers our com-
munity will both participate in and lead.”
Watercrest Senior Living has made their purpose
and passion to serve others and create a sense of
“Common Unity.” In addition to fundraising events,
Watercrest of Lake Nona also plans on providing en-
couragement to OCPS visual and performing arts stu-
dents through cards, letters or performance events.
Chris Shepherd says, “We know residents and stu-
dents will benefit from this intergenerational connec-
According to the State of Florida Department of
Elder Affairs, “Our elders give us a mature, historical
perspective of who we are, where we are, where we
came from, and how we got there. Our youth give us
a childlike vision of the future and all that we can still
be. Intergenerational programs give us the opportu-
nity to bridge these vantage points, creating a strong
sense of community and an appreciation for the con-
tributions of each group.”
Thanks to Watercrest at Lake Nona and OCPS, our
Nonahood community is fortunate to have a place
where our children and our seniors can benefit from
sharing the richness each generation brings. Look for
more updates in our upcoming issues regarding Wa-
tercrest at Lake Nona fundraising events.
